Pictory vs. Traditional Video Editing: An 80-Year-Old Blogger's Experience

There was a time when making a video meant sitting in front of a computer, learning editing software, finding the right buttons, cutting clips, adding music, adjusting the sound, and then spending quite a bit of time wondering why the finished video still didn't look the way I imagined.

I have been there.

Today, artificial intelligence is changing that experience.

One of the AI video tools that caught my attention is Pictory. As someone who has been making videos, writing blog posts and experimenting with different AI tools, I find the idea particularly interesting.

So I started asking myself a simple question:

Can AI make video creation easier without taking away the human side of storytelling?

Traditional Video Editing: I Learned It the Hard Way

Traditional video editing gives you tremendous control.

You can choose exactly where a video begins and ends. You can adjust the volume, add transitions, insert pictures, change the timing and work on every little detail.

That is also its biggest problem.

There are so many things you can do that it can become difficult to know what you should do.

For a professional video editor, this may not be a problem.

For an ordinary blogger like me, it can be a different story.

I don't want to spend hours learning complicated editing techniques.

I want to tell a story.

That distinction is important.

Then Along Came AI

AI video tools approach the problem differently.

Instead of asking me to become a professional video editor, they try to help me become a better storyteller.

That is what interests me about Pictory.

The attraction isn't simply that AI can produce a video.

The attraction is that AI may be able to take some of the technical work out of the process so that I can spend more time thinking about the idea behind the video.

For a blogger, that is a very appealing proposition.

What Could Pictory Change?

Imagine that I have written a blog post about something I experienced.

Perhaps it is a morning at Hillcrest Mall.

Perhaps it is a karaoke afternoon with friends.

Perhaps it is something I discovered while experimenting with ChatGPT.

Traditionally, I might need to think about the video separately from the article.

With an AI video platform such as Pictory, the possibility of turning written content into video becomes much more interesting.

One piece of content could potentially become several forms:

Blog post → video → short video → social media content

That is powerful for a small independent blogger.

I don't have a large production team.

I don't have a video editor.

I don't have someone sitting beside me choosing images and arranging clips.

I have an idea, a computer, a camera, and AI.

That's a very different kind of media operation.

But I Don't Want AI to Tell My Story for Me

Here is where I think we need to be careful.

AI can help create a video.

But AI doesn't know why the story matters to me.

Suppose I write about an ordinary morning at a shopping mall.

To an AI system, it might simply be:

Person visits shopping mall. Person drinks coffee. Person walks around.

But to me, there may be much more behind that simple event.

Maybe I met someone.

Maybe I discovered something unexpected.

Maybe I was thinking about my family.

Maybe something happened that made me happy that day.

Those are human details.

And they are precisely what can make an ordinary story worth reading or watching.

So I don't want AI to replace my voice.

I want AI to help me express my voice more efficiently.

The 80-Year-Old Blogger's Perspective

At my age, I look at technology somewhat differently from a young technology enthusiast.

I'm not interested in learning every new application that appears on the internet.

There are simply too many.

What interests me is whether a technology can make my life easier, help me learn something new, or help me share my experiences with other people.

That's why AI has become such an interesting subject for me.

I am not an AI engineer.

I'm not trying to build the next great AI company.

I'm simply exploring.

I learn something.

I try it.

Sometimes it works.

Sometimes it doesn't.

Then I write about what I discovered.

That is essentially what AI123.ca has become for me.

I Explore → I Learn → I Document.

And perhaps that is exactly where an AI video tool fits into my journey.

Pictory vs. Traditional Editing

For me, the comparison isn't really about which technology is "better."

It's about which one is better for the job I want to do.

Traditional Video EditingAI-Assisted Video Creation
Greater manual controlMore automation
Requires more technical learningEasier starting point
Editing can take considerable timeCan speed up parts of the process
Excellent for detailed productionAttractive for bloggers and content creators
Human controls almost every stepAI can assist with many decisions
Best when precision is criticalBest when speed and simplicity matter

There is still a place for traditional video editing.

If I were producing a professional film, commercial or highly polished production, I would want extensive control.

But if I want to turn a blog post into an interesting video without spending half my day editing it, AI becomes very attractive.

The Real Test Is Not the Technology

Ultimately, I think the real test is very simple:

Does it help me tell a better story?

Not:

"How many AI features does it have?"

Not:

"How impressive is the technology?"

And not:

"Can it replace a professional video editor?"

Those questions may be interesting.

But they aren't my questions.

My question is:

Can an 80-year-old blogger use it comfortably enough to create something worth sharing?

That's the test I care about.

I Am Going to Try It

I'm interested enough to give Pictory a proper look.

Rather than simply reading about it and repeating what other people say, I want to approach it the same way I approach other AI tools:

Try it myself.

If it makes something easier, I'll say so.

If I find limitations, I'll say that too.

And if traditional video editing turns out to be better for certain situations, I'll say that as well.

That's the advantage of being an independent blogger.

I don't need to tell you that every AI tool is wonderful.

I can simply tell you what I discovered.

My Early Conclusion

Pictory represents something I find increasingly interesting about artificial intelligence.

AI doesn't necessarily have to replace people.

Sometimes its greatest value is simply removing some of the tedious work between an idea and the finished product.

For someone like me, that can make a real difference.

I have stories I want to tell.

I have experiences I want to document.

And I don't want complicated technology to become the reason I don't tell them.

If AI can help me move from an idea to a finished video more easily, then I am interested.

But I'll make the final judgment after I actually use it.

That's the way I prefer to explore AI:

I Explore → I Learn → I Document.

And perhaps the next thing I document will be my real experience with Pictory.

Pictory

Pictory
