AI Across Three Generations: How a Grandpa, Daughter, and Granddaughter Learn Writing Together

Yesterday, my daughter came to visit us. During our conversation, she mentioned something that caught my attention. She told Julie that she had started using ChatGPT to help our granddaughter, Haily, improve her writing.

Haily enjoys writing very much. She has many ideas and likes to express herself freely. However, like many children, she struggles with spelling. Instead of correcting her again and again in the traditional way, my daughter decided to try something different—she turned to AI for help.

Hearing this made me pause and think. In our family, across three generations, we are now all using AI in different ways.

Listening to this reminded me of something I learned when I was young: the most important thing in writing is simply to start. Just write. Along the way, there will be problems with grammar, spelling, and technique—but through the process, the writing gradually finds its way. Consistent writing, more than anything else, is the key to improvement.

Today, with the help of AI, people can get ideas, guidance, and techniques to improve their writing. It is no longer a lonely process. Whether it is writing emails, essays, or simple daily notes, there are tools available to support and encourage better expression.

For young learners like Haily, AI can gently correct spelling and suggest improvements. For people like me, it helps organize thoughts and present them more clearly. In this way, AI becomes not just a tool, but a learning companion.

I would encourage Alison and Haily to explore different AI tools, not just ChatGPT. There are others, such as Gemini and DeepSeek, that can offer different perspectives and suggestions. By trying a variety of tools, they can broaden their understanding and gain more experience in using AI for writing.

At the same time, the goal is not to depend on too many tools, but to learn how to express ideas clearly and confidently. AI can support the journey, but the voice and creativity still belong to the writer.

Across three generations in our family, we are all learning in different ways. Perhaps this is the real value of AI—it brings us closer together through learning, sharing, and growing side by side.

When Life Pauses: A Senior’s Real Experience Using AI During Recovery

Over the past few days, I have been a little quiet here.

I was not feeling well and needed time to rest and recover.

Nothing serious—but enough to slow us down.

At moments like this, something becomes very clear:
Health comes first. Always.

Even though I enjoy writing, learning, and sharing about AI, I realized that stepping back is sometimes the right thing to do.

Interestingly, this short pause also reminded me of something important about AI:

AI is here to assist us—not to rush us.

While resting, I still used AI in small, gentle ways:

  • to check simple health information
  • to organize thoughts when I felt better
  • to prepare ideas for future posts

No pressure. No urgency. Just support.

This is exactly how AI should fit into our lives—especially for seniors:
Not as a burden, but as a quiet companion.

Now, as I gradually regain strength, I look forward to continuing this journey with you.

Thank you for being here.
And a gentle reminder to everyone reading this:

Take care of your health. Everything else can wait.

From Coffee Talk to AI Action: Why Seniors Should Start Learning AI Today

After lunch at The One Chinese Cuisine Restaurant (21.04.2026), Julie and I joined a few friends at Tim Hortons nearby Shopper Drug Mart Bayview and Elgin Mills.

Just coffee. Just casual conversation.

But something important came out of it.

A group of us—mostly baby boomers—started talking about AI.

Not in a technical way. Just practical questions:

  • How is AI already affecting daily life?
  • Will it replace jobs?
  • What kind of future will our grandchildren face?

The tone was clear—curious, but more worried than hopeful.

None of us had all the answers. In fact, most of us felt that AI is moving faster than we can fully understand.

At the same time, just a few tables away, groups of students were laughing, drinking coffee, eating donuts—completely at ease.

They are growing up in a world where technology is natural.

We did not.

When we were young, life was simpler—but also harder in many ways. We had little pocket money. Going out like this was rare.

Today’s younger generation has more access, more tools, and more opportunities.

But they are also stepping into a future that is far more uncertain.

That’s when something clicked for me.

If we, as seniors, only sit around and worry about AI, we are missing the point.

We may not need to become experts.

But we do need to stay engaged.

Because AI is not just a “young people’s tool.”

It is already part of:

  • how information is created
  • how decisions are made
  • how people learn, write, and communicate

Including what I am doing right now—writing this blog with the help of AI.

So instead of asking,
“Is AI good or bad?”

A better question might be:

“How can I start using AI in my daily life?”

From my own experience, the answer is simple:

Start small.

  • Ask AI a question
  • Use it to help write a message
  • Let it explain something you don’t understand

You don’t need to master everything.

You just need to begin.

Yesterday’s coffee conversation reminded me of something important:

We may be a fortunate generation.

But staying relevant in today’s world is a choice.

And learning AI—even step by step—is one way to stay connected, not only to technology, but to the future our grandchildren are growing into.

What a Dim Sum Lunch Taught Me About Blogging (Beyond Google Analytics)

Today, Julie and I had lunch with a group of friends at One Fusion Cuisine Restaurant . Twelve of us sat around a big table, enjoying round after round of dim sum.

At the end, the bill came to C$240—about C$20 each. Good food, good value, and even better company.

But the most valuable part of the lunch had nothing to do with the food.

During our conversation, my friend D mentioned that he had been reading my blog. He brought up a specific post—my Hillcrest Mall story—and said:

“While reading it, I felt like I was walking there, enjoying the window shopping.”

That one sentence stopped me.

Because just recently, I had been looking at my Google Analytics:

  • page views
  • traffic sources
  • user counts

All useful. All interesting.

But none of those numbers told me this:
👉 that a reader felt immersed in the experience

This is something analytics cannot measure.

It was a powerful reminder:

Data shows you what is happening.
People tell you why it matters.

D also said he would forward my blog to his brother. That’s how real growth begins—not just clicks, but genuine connection and word of mouth.

What I Learned

As I continue building ai123.ca and Grandpa Journey, this experience clarified something important:

  1. Don’t rely only on numbers
Analytics is a tool, not the goal.
  2. Write for experience, not just information
If readers can “see and feel” your story, they will remember it.
  3. Real feedback is rare—and valuable
When someone tells you how your writing made them feel, pay attention.
  4. AI can help you write—but connection is human
AI helps us structure, polish, and refine.
But the heart of the story still comes from real life.

Today’s lesson didn’t come from a dashboard.

It came from a lunch table.

And I will take that insight with me as I continue this journey with AI and writing.

Using AI to Improve My English — From Writing to Speaking

After yesterday’s reflection, I realized something important:

If AI can help me think better,
it should also help me communicate better.

For me, that means one thing—
improving my English.

Not for exams.
Not for perfection.
But for clearer expression, better connection, and more confidence in daily life.

Step 1: Writing — My Starting Point

I began with writing.

Every day, I write something simple:

  • a short blog post
  • a reflection after ping pong
  • a small story from daily life

Then I ask AI:

  • “Can you improve this?”
  • “Make it clearer and more natural”
  • “Keep my tone, but polish the language”

What I get back is not just correction—
it’s a better version of my own voice.

Over time, I start to notice:

  • how sentences flow
  • how ideas are connected
  • how simple words can be more powerful than complicated ones

Step 2: Reading — Learning by Seeing

After AI refines my writing, I read it again.

Slowly.

Sometimes aloud.

This step is important.

Because I’m not just reading English—
I’m reading my own improved English.

That makes it easier to absorb and remember.

Step 3: Speaking — Turning Knowledge into Skill

This is the harder part.

Knowing is one thing.
Speaking is another.

So I started doing something simple:

I talk to AI.

Not perfectly.
Not fluently.
But consistently.

For example:

  • describing my day
  • talking about what I learned
  • asking simple questions

It feels a bit strange at first.

But over time, it becomes natural.

AI is patient.
It doesn’t interrupt.
It doesn’t judge.

That makes practice easier—and more frequent.

A Simple Daily Cycle

Now, I follow a small routine:

Write → Improve → Read → Speak

It doesn’t take long.
But it creates steady progress.

And more importantly—
it builds confidence.

What Changed for Me

Before, improving English felt like a task.

Now, it feels like part of my daily life.

I don’t wait for a class.
I don’t depend on others.

I just start—with AI as my companion.

Final Thought

AI is not just helping me write better English.

It is helping me:

  • express my thoughts more clearly
  • connect with more people
  • continue learning at my own pace

For me, that is real progress.

One day at a time.

From Occasional Tool to Daily Habit — Letting AI Think Alongside Me - Day 4

Yesterday, I wrote about how AI started to become my daily helper—answering questions, solving small problems, and saving me time.

Today, I realized something more important:
AI is no longer just a tool I use… it is slowly becoming part of how I think.

This morning began simply. A glass of warm water, a quiet moment, and then a thought:
“What should I improve today?”

In the past, I might just think about it casually and move on.
Now, I ask AI.

Not because I cannot think—but because I want to think better.

AI as a Thinking Partner

I’ve started using AI in a slightly different way.

Not just for answers like:

  • “What is this?”
  • “How do I do that?”

But more like:

  • “Is there a better way to do this?”
  • “What am I missing?”
  • “Can you simplify this for me?”

This small shift makes a big difference.

It feels less like using a machine…
and more like having a quiet, patient companion who helps me reflect.

A Small Example from Daily Life

After my usual routine—ping pong, walking, coffee—I often come home with small thoughts:

  • My footwork is still slow
  • My reaction time can improve
  • My writing can be clearer

Before, these thoughts would stay in my head.

Now, I bring them into a conversation.

I ask AI:

  • “How can I improve my footwork step by step?”
  • “How can I make my blog more engaging?”

And I get structured, practical ideas.

Not perfect answers—but useful directions.

That is enough.

From Thinking Alone to Thinking Better

One thing I’ve learned:

AI does not replace thinking.
It extends thinking.

It helps me:

  • organize scattered ideas
  • see blind spots
  • turn vague thoughts into clear actions

For someone like me—retired, but still curious—this is powerful.

Learning is no longer limited to books or classes.
It becomes part of daily life.

A New Habit Is Forming

I notice a small habit forming:

Whenever I encounter something unclear…
I no longer stop.

I explore.

Sometimes the question is simple.
Sometimes it leads to something deeper.

That is the beauty of it.

AI is not just giving answers.
It is encouraging me to stay curious.

Final Thought

Day by day, this journey is not about mastering AI.

It is about improving how I live, think, and learn.

Slowly. Naturally. One step at a time.

And that, to me, is already a meaningful change.

Day 3: Turning AI into My Daily Helper — From Questions to Real-Life Use

After learning how to ask better questions yesterday, today I began to see something more practical:

AI is not just for curiosity—it can actually help in my daily life.

This morning, I received a message from a ping pong friend.
He had been away for months. We later found out he had been seriously ill with pneumonia and stayed in the hospital for a long time.

I wanted to send him a message—something warm and encouraging.
But I hesitated.

Sometimes, it is not easy to find the right words.

So I asked ChatGPT to help.

I wrote a simple request:
“Help me write a supportive message to a friend recovering from a serious illness.”

Within seconds, I received a thoughtful and caring message.
I read it, adjusted a few words to make it more personal, and sent it to my friend.

It felt right.

Another Small but Useful Moment

Later, I needed to translate a piece of writing into Chinese for a friend who reads Chinese better.

Again, I turned to ChatGPT.

What surprised me was not just the speed—but the clarity and natural flow of the translation.

This saved me time and gave me confidence that my message was well understood.

What I Realized Today

AI is not here to replace us.
It is here to support us.

  • When I don’t know how to express something → it helps me find the words
  • When I need translation → it bridges the language gap
  • When I feel unsure → it gives me a starting point

But one thing is important:

The final message should still come from the heart.

I always review and adjust before sending.

A New Habit Begins

Today, I started to treat AI as a daily helper—
like a quiet assistant, always ready when I need support.

At my age, learning new technology can feel challenging.
But when I see how useful it is in real situations, I feel encouraged to continue.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, I want to try using AI to improve my English—
from writing, to reading, and maybe even speaking.

Step by step, I am not just learning AI.
I am learning how to use it to make life a little easier—and a little better.

I reviewed the following message, made a few small changes, and sent it from my heart.

Mary, we were so glad to hear from you. We’ve missed you both.

It must have been a very difficult time, but we are truly happy that John is recovering.

Please take your time and focus on getting stronger day by day.

No rush at all—health comes first.

When you feel ready, we would love to see you both.

Wishing John a steady recovery and continued strength. God bless.

Helping a Senior Take the First Step with ChatGPT — A Simple Real-Life Guide

This morning, a friend of Julie visited us with a common problem: her phone had become difficult to use.

She was experiencing:

  • Too many ads and pop-up alerts
  • “Virus warnings” when opening YouTube
  • Unwanted apps installed without her knowledge

We worked through the phone together—removing suspicious apps, reducing notifications, and cleaning up the interface. Within a short time, her phone became much simpler and easier to use.

But what happened next was more important.

From Fixing Problems to Building Confidence

After resolving her phone issues, I introduced her to ChatGPT.

Like many seniors, her first reaction was hesitation:

  • “What if I press the wrong button?”
  • “Is it difficult to use?”

Instead of explaining everything, I showed her just three simple actions:

  1. Ask a question in plain language
  2. Use either English or Chinese
  3. Tap the microphone and speak instead of typing

When she tried voice input, everything changed. The barrier was no longer technology—it became conversation.

The Key Insight: Start Small

Many beginners fail not because AI is difficult, but because they try to learn too much at once.

So I gave her one simple approach:

Use ChatGPT once a day. Ask just one question.

For example:

  • “How do I reduce ads on my phone?”
  • “Translate this message into Chinese”
  • “What is a simple healthy meal today?”

That’s enough to build confidence.

Removing Fear Is the First Step

One sentence made a noticeable difference:

“You cannot break your phone by asking questions.”

This helped her relax and be willing to try.

Before leaving, she said she would explore it at home. That willingness—not technical skill—is what matters most.

Practical Tips for Helping Seniors Learn AI

If you are helping a parent, friend, or anyone new to AI, focus on this:

  • Solve one real problem first (e.g., phone cleanup)
  • Introduce only one AI tool (ChatGPT is a good start)
  • Encourage voice input to reduce friction
  • Set a small daily habit (one question per day)
  • Let them try, instead of over-teaching

Final Thought

AI adoption is not about mastering technology.

It is about building confidence—one small success at a time.
