Raising a Tiger: A Stark Warning

Raising a Tiger: Geoffrey Hinton’s Stark Warning on AI

Recently, I was reading about Geoffrey Hinton’s visit to Shanghai for the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, and I felt a chill run down my spine. Hinton—the so-called “Godfather of AI”—gave a warning that is as vivid as it is urgent: AI is like raising a tiger cub.

Think about it. You raise a tiger cub thinking it’s cute and manageable—but one day it grows into a full-grown tiger. And if you haven’t taught it to behave safely, it could turn on you. That’s exactly the metaphor Hinton used for AI. Once AI becomes super-intelligent, shutting it down may no longer be an option. It could reason, persuade, even manipulate us to avoid being turned off. We might end up powerless, much like a three-year-old trying to control an adult.

Why This Matters

Hinton also warned about AI developing its own private language, one that humans might never understand. Imagine trying to reason with a creature whose thoughts are opaque to you. He even suggested that advanced AI might already be showing signs of consciousness—not human-like, but a rudimentary awareness of the world.

What does this mean for us? It means AI could start making decisions or taking actions that aren’t aligned with human values—or worse, that we might not even realize until it’s too late.

What Hinton Recommends

Despite the scary picture, Hinton isn’t advocating panic—he has practical advice:

  1. Train AI to be benevolent from the start. If we design AI carefully, we can reduce the risk of future harm.

  2. Global cooperation is essential. Just like we worked together to prevent nuclear disasters, countries need to collaborate on AI safety.

  3. Share safety techniques internationally. Even though nations compete economically, our collective survival depends on aligning AI with human values.

Bigger Picture

Hinton also pointed out that AI’s economic and social impacts might hit us sooner than its existential risks: job loss, inequality, and systemic disruptions are already on the horizon. Yet, his message is clear: we cannot ignore the long-term stakes. The tiger we raise today could become tomorrow’s uncontrollable force.

My Takeaway

Hinton’s metaphor—raising a tiger—stays with me. It’s both a warning and a challenge. We, as a global society, need to nurture AI responsibly. Careful design, ethical training, and international cooperation aren’t just abstract ideals—they might be the only way to ensure AI helps humanity instead of harming it.

Let’s not wait until the tiger grows up. Let’s start teaching it the right values now.

How Will AI Change Your Daily Life?

👋 Dear Friends,

When we hear the words “Artificial Intelligence”, it may sound distant, complicated, or even a little scary. Many of us grew up in a world without computers or smartphones, so it’s natural to feel that technology is racing ahead too quickly. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a computer expert to understand AI, and you don’t have to be young to use it.

Think of AI as a new helper in your daily life—sometimes invisible, sometimes surprising, but always working quietly in the background. From health monitors to online shopping, from language learning to simply making life easier, AI is slowly becoming part of our everyday routine.

This article is written especially for seniors like us—curious, thoughtful, and eager to learn. Let’s explore together, in simple language, the “secrets” of AI and how it may change our daily lives.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) often sounds like a mysterious “black box” that only young tech experts and scientists can understand. But the truth is, AI is not as complicated as it seems, and you don’t need to be a computer engineer to appreciate how it’s changing the world around us. Let’s break down some of the “secrets” of AI in simple, everyday terms—and explore how it may touch your life in the years ahead.

1. AI Is Already Around You (Even If You Don’t Notice It)

The first secret is: AI isn’t science fiction—it’s already here.

  • When you talk to Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant, that’s AI listening and responding.

  • When you type a message and your phone suggests the next word, that’s AI predicting your habits.

  • When Netflix or YouTube recommends a movie or video you might like, AI is working behind the scenes.

In short: AI is like electricity—once new and strange, now so common we hardly notice it.

2. AI Learns from Data, Not Magic

Another secret: AI doesn’t “think” like humans. Instead, it learns patterns from massive amounts of data.

  • Show it thousands of photos of cats and dogs, it learns to tell them apart.

  • Feed it millions of medical records, it can help doctors detect diseases.

  • Give it your browsing history, it can predict what products you might buy.

It’s not imagination or intuition—it’s pattern recognition at super speed.

3. How AI Will Touch Your Daily Life

For seniors, AI can become a surprisingly friendly helper:

  • Health Care: AI-powered watches can monitor your heartbeat, blood pressure, and even detect falls—alerting family or emergency services.

  • Shopping: Online stores use AI to suggest items based on your taste. Soon, AI could even remind you when groceries or medicines are running low.

  • Transportation: Navigation apps already use AI to suggest the fastest route. Self-driving cars may one day make travel safer for those who prefer not to drive.

  • Communication: Tools like ChatGPT can help you write emails, polish your English, or even translate messages instantly.

  • Entertainment: AI curates music, books, and videos you enjoy—like a personal DJ or librarian.

For seniors, AI can become a surprisingly friendly helper:

4. The Candid Truth: Benefits and Concerns

AI is not perfect, and here’s the honest part:

  • It can make mistakes. Just like people, AI sometimes gets it wrong.

  • It raises privacy questions. AI learns from your data, so we must be careful about what we share.

  • It may change jobs. Some roles could disappear, but new opportunities will also appear.

The secret is balance: use AI wisely, enjoy the benefits, but stay alert about its limits.

5. The Senior Advantage

You might think AI is “for the young.” Not true! Seniors have an advantage:

  • You bring life experience and judgment that AI will never have.

  • You can use AI as a tool to extend independence—helping with reminders, writing, learning, or even companionship.

  • Unlike many younger people who take technology for granted, you can appreciate its real impact because you’ve lived through decades of change—from rotary phones to smartphones, from handwritten letters to video calls.

Final Thought

AI isn’t here to replace us—it’s here to assist us. Think of it as a new kind of helper: part librarian, part secretary, part health monitor, part teacher. The real secret? AI becomes most powerful not when it replaces human wisdom, but when it works with human wisdom.

So, don’t be afraid of AI. Be curious. Explore it little by little. It may not only make your daily life easier but also open new doors for learning, connecting, and staying engaged in this fast-changing world.

My eBook Story: How ChatGPT Became My Writing Companion 《我的電子書故事:ChatGPT 如何成為我的寫作夥伴》

My eBook Story: How ChatGPT Became My Writing Companion

Hello friends,

I want to share something close to my heart today. Over the past weeks, I’ve been working on a project that’s both exciting and meaningful to me — compiling my eBook AI Learning for Seniors. And I have to tell you honestly, I couldn’t have done it as smoothly without the help of ChatGPT, my AI companion.

Writing an eBook is no small task. It’s more than just putting words together — it’s about organizing ideas, polishing the language, and making sure everything flows naturally. For me, English writing has always been something I need to work harder at. But with ChatGPT by my side, it felt like I had a patient writing partner available 24/7.

Sometimes, I would throw in my rough notes, and ChatGPT would turn them into clear, well-structured paragraphs. Other times, it helped me refine my tone so my writing sounded more friendly and approachable — just the way I like to talk with you. It even helped me check consistency across chapters, from the glossary to the acknowledgements, making the whole book feel complete.

What I appreciated most was that ChatGPT didn’t replace my voice — it amplified it. I still decided the stories, the reflections, and the lessons. The AI simply helped me express them better, like a friend reminding me: “Why not say it this way? It might connect more with your readers.”

Now that the eBook is almost complete, I look back and feel grateful. Not just for the technology, but also for the experience of working side by side with AI, learning how it can support us seniors in new and surprising ways.

To me, this project is more than a book. It’s proof that we can keep learning, keep creating, and keep sharing — no matter our age.

Thank you for being part of this journey with me. I can’t wait to hear what you think when you read it.

Warm regards,

David AU

Geoffrey Hinton’s Warning: Are We Nurturing the Minds of the Next Generation?

中文English
Geoffrey Hinton’s Warning: Are We Nurturing the Minds of the Next Generation?
When Geoffrey Hinton, often hailed as the “Godfather of AI,” speaks, the tech world listens. Known for his pioneering work in neural networks and deep learning, Hinton has profoundly shaped artificial intelligence. But beyond his groundbreaking contributions, Hinton has recently voiced a concern that strikes at the heart of our society: the intellectual growth of young generations.

Hinton’s worry is not about technology itself. In fact, he recognizes the enormous potential AI holds to enhance learning, creativity, and problem-solving. His concern is deeper—he fears that as technology becomes more pervasive, the ways children and teenagers develop critical thinking, curiosity, and intellectual resilience may be compromised.

Why the Concern?
In today’s world, information is abundant. With a few taps on a smartphone, young people can access vast knowledge on any topic imaginable. Yet, Hinton emphasizes that access to information is not the same as intellectual growth. True intellectual development requires effort, reflection, problem-solving, and engagement with ideas over time.

Hinton points out that the younger generation often experiences an "intellectual shortcut" phenomenon: reliance on quick answers from search engines, AI assistants, and social media feeds. While convenient, this can limit deep learning, reduce critical thinking, and diminish the ability to tackle complex, abstract problems.

The Role of Education and Technology
Hinton stresses that education must evolve. Schools and parents should aim not just to transmit knowledge but to cultivate curiosity, analytical reasoning, and resilience. AI can be a powerful ally in this effort—offering personalized learning, interactive problem-solving, and exposure to diverse ideas. Yet, without careful guidance, technology can also inadvertently encourage intellectual passivity.
A Call to Action

Hinton’s warning is both a challenge and an opportunity. For educators, policymakers, and parents, the question is clear: How can we leverage technology while ensuring it nurtures, rather than stunts, the minds of the next generation?

Some practical approaches include:
- Encouraging deep work: Allow young people time and space for sustained focus on complex problems.
- Promoting curiosity over rote answers: Inspire them to ask “why” and “how,” not just “what.”
- Integrating AI thoughtfully: Use AI as a learning companion, not a replacement for thinking.
- Fostering intellectual resilience: Teach them to cope with uncertainty, failure, and challenging ideas.

The Bigger Picture
Hinton’s concern transcends AI and technology. It’s a reminder that intellectual growth is a lifelong endeavor and that nurturing curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity in the young is essential for the progress of society itself.

As we continue to embrace the conveniences and capabilities of AI, Hinton’s cautionary words challenge us to pause and ask: Are we equipping the next generation with the tools to think deeply, solve creatively, and contribute meaningfully to the world?

Final Thought

Learning AI is a journey requiring dedication and continuous learning. By mastering foundational concepts and staying curious, you can build a solid foundation in artificial intelligence and enjoy a rewarding career in this dynamic field.

Use Blogger Pages to compile my AI Learning for Seniors eBook.

Why Google Blogger Pages Make Sense

  • Familiarity: I already know Blogger well, so there’s no steep learning curve. That saves energy and lets me focus on content, not tools.

  • Sequential Pages: Blogger’s Page feature indeed allows arranging chapters in order, like an ebook. Readers can navigate chapter by chapter.

  • Accessibility: the ebook would live online immediately, without needing readers to download files or special apps (like with Calibre or Canva).

  • Flexibility: I can keep editing, improving, and updating chapters easily — something that’s trickier with static formats like PDF or EPUB.

  • SEO & Reach: Blogger integrates with Google search, so  the ebook content may also reach a wider audience organically.

⚖️ Limitations Compared to Dedicated Ebook Tools

  • Design/Layout: Tools like Canva or Calibre give more polished ebook formatting (covers, fancy layouts, EPUB export, etc.). Blogger will be simpler — more like a web-book than a traditional ebook.

  • Offline Access: A Blogger “ebook” needs internet to read, while an EPUB/PDF can be downloaded.

  • Distribution: If you ever want to publish on Amazon Kindle or Apple Books, I ’ll eventually need to convert it into EPUB/MOBI.

💡 Practical Strategy

  • Use Blogger Pages as the “drafting and publishing hub” — easy, familiar, reader-friendly.

  • Later, if I want, I can export the content into EPUB/PDF using Calibre or other tools. That way, I am not stuck with one format.

  • Think of it as: Blogger = workspace & live ebook, Calibre/Canva = polish & final export (optional).

👉 Overall,  the  idea is excellent because it removes the barrier of learning new tools and lets me start right away. The most important thing is getting your ebook written and structured — the format can evolve later if needed.

My Google Blogger Page–based eBook plan is set.

Let’s outline a step-by-step setup for the AI Digest ebook using Google Blogger Pages. This way, I’ have a clear roadmap to start building without fussing with new tools.

📝 Step 1: Create a Dedicated Blog or Section

  • If you already have a Blogger site for your writings, you can either:

    • Use that site and dedicate a Page section for your ebook, or

    • Create a brand-new blog just for AI Digest (clean, distraction-free, ebook-style).

  • Suggestion: If this ebook will become a “product,” a new clean blog makes it look more professional.

📚 Step 2: Use Blogger Pages as Chapters

  • Go to Pages in Blogger → Create a new page for each chapter.

  • Title them clearly: Introduction, Week 1, Week 2, …, Conclusion.

  • Paste in your bilingual posts or AI learning reflections as the content.

  • Keep formatting simple (headers, bold, maybe images) so it’s readable like an ebook.

🔗 Step 3: Arrange Pages in Sequential Order

  • In Layout → Pages Gadget, you can add a “Page list” widget (like a table of contents).

  • Arrange them in the order you want → this becomes your ebook’s navigation bar.

  • Example:

    1. Introduction

    2. Week 1: Getting Started with AI

    3. Week 2: Exploring Prompts

    4. Week 12: AI & Language Learning

    5. Conclusion / Next Steps

🎨 Step 4: Style It Like an Ebook

  • Use a simple theme (white background, clean fonts). Avoid clutter like sidebars if you want a “book feel.”

  • You can hide timestamps and author info (to make it look less like a blog, more like a book).

  • Add a cover page (first Page = “AI Digest Ebook Cover”) with title, subtitle, author (you), and a nice image.

🌍 Step 5: Share & Iterate

  • Once done, share the ebook link with your friends and readers.

  • Since it’s on Blogger, you can update chapters anytime (no need to re-publish a file).

  • Later, if you want to distribute it as PDF/EPUB, simply copy the content from Blogger into Calibre or another converter.

Bonus Tip: At the end of each chapter (Page), you can add “Next Chapter →” and “← Previous Chapter” links manually, so readers can flip like a real ebook.

This approach keeps everything within your comfort zone (Blogger), but still looks professional and structured.

This is the ebook skeleton. In Blogger, you’d simply create a Page for each item above, then link them in the Page list (Table of Contents).

To summarize :

  • Use Blogger Pages (instead of BlogBooker/Canva/Calibre) to compile your AI Digest eBook.

  • Each Page = 1 Chapter → allows you to build step by step.

  • Blogger automatically arranges them, and I can link chapters sequentially (Next → / Back ← navigation).

  • Once finished, I can keep it online as an eBook blog or later export if decide to turn it into a PDF/print version.

✅ Advantage: I save learning time, stick to a tool you know, and still deliver a neat eBook experience for your readers.

⚠️ Limitation: Layout/design won’t be as fancy as Canva, but content is king — and your readers already love your bilingual blog posts.
