ChatGPT for Seniors: How I Use It Every Day at 80

Many people assume ChatGPT is only for young people, students, or technology professionals. But at 80 years old, I use ChatGPT almost every single day. It has quietly become my writing partner, research assistant, English tutor, and digital companion.

I am not a programmer. I am a retired senior who enjoys blogging, reading world news, traveling, and playing ping pong with friends. If I can use AI comfortably at my age, other seniors can too.

Let me share how I actually use ChatGPT in my daily life.

My Morning Routine with ChatGPT

Most mornings begin simply. I sit down with a cup of warm water or coffee and open my laptop.

Sometimes I ask:

  • “Summarize today’s global news in simple English.”

  • “Explain the latest geopolitical issue in plain language.”

  • “What are the key developments in AI this week?”

Instead of scrolling endlessly through headlines, I get a structured summary that helps me understand the big picture quickly. It saves time and keeps my mind active.

At 80, mental clarity matters. Reading and thinking deeply every morning helps me stay sharp.

How ChatGPT Helps Me Write

As a blogger, writing is important to me. I have many ideas, but expressing them clearly in English sometimes takes effort.

Here’s how I use ChatGPT:

  • “Improve this paragraph for clarity and flow.”

  • “Make this title more engaging.”

  • “Turn this reflection into a structured blog post.”

  • “Give me 5 FAQ questions for this article.”

I still do the thinking. The ideas are mine.
ChatGPT simply helps me organize and polish them.

Instead of struggling for hours editing grammar or structure, I can focus on the message I want to share.

Learning and Curiosity at 80

Retirement does not mean the mind retires.

I often ask questions out of pure curiosity:

  • “Explain the Panama Canal issue in simple terms.”

  • “What is the difference between Edge and Chrome browsers?”

  • “Why do seniors wake up early?”

  • “How can I improve my oral English?”

When I don’t understand something, I ask again. And again.

ChatGPT does not get impatient.

That matters.

At our age, some seniors feel embarrassed asking basic questions. With AI, there is no judgment. Only learning.

Travel Planning and Practical Help

Before trips, I use ChatGPT to:

  • Compare cruise lines

  • Understand visa requirements

  • Get packing suggestions

  • Research destinations

It helps me prepare more confidently. I still verify important details, of course, but AI gives me a strong starting point.

Why It’s Easier Than Many Seniors Think

Many seniors believe AI is complicated.

It is not.

You simply type your question in normal language — just like talking to a person.

You can even use voice typing.

No coding. No technical background required.

If you know how to send a message or search on Google, you can use ChatGPT.

A Personal Reflection

At my age, many friends are slowing down. Some feel technology is moving too fast. Some choose to step back.

I decided to lean forward instead.

I may not learn as fast as I did decades ago, but I have learned something important: consistency matters more than speed.

Each day I ask one question.
Each day I learn something new.

That habit keeps my mind alive.

My Advice to Other Seniors

If you are curious about AI but hesitant, start small.

Try asking:

  • “Explain ChatGPT in simple terms.”

  • “Give me 3 easy dinner ideas.”

  • “Summarize today’s news.”

  • “Help me improve this sentence.”

Treat it like a patient assistant.

You may be surprised how quickly it becomes part of your daily routine.

Final Thoughts

ChatGPT has become part of my everyday life at 80 — not because I am a technology expert, but because I am willing to keep learning.

Age should not limit curiosity.

If an 80-year-old retiree can use AI confidently, perhaps you can too.

Start with one simple question.

Frequently Asked Questions About ChatGPT for Seniors

1. Can an 80-year-old really use ChatGPT easily?

Yes. ChatGPT does not require technical skills. If you can type a question in normal language — like sending a message — you can use it. Many seniors find it easier than expected once they try.

2. Is ChatGPT safe for seniors to use?

ChatGPT is generally safe for everyday learning, writing, and research. However, seniors should avoid sharing sensitive personal information such as banking details, passwords, or identification numbers — just as they would online.

3. What are the best ways for seniors to start using ChatGPT?

Start with simple questions:

  • “Summarize today’s news.”

  • “Give me easy dinner ideas.”

  • “Explain this topic in simple English.”
    Starting small builds confidence quickly.

4. Can ChatGPT help seniors improve memory and mental sharpness?

Yes. Asking questions, reading explanations, learning new topics, and writing regularly all stimulate the brain. While it is not a medical tool, it can support lifelong learning and mental engagement.

5. Do seniors need to pay to use ChatGPT?

There is a free version that works very well for daily use. Paid versions offer additional features, but many seniors can benefit greatly from the free option.

After Two Years With AI: Am I Becoming Smarter, or Just More Efficient?

This is one of Grandpa's earlier stories, revisited while Grandpa takes a short break.

For about two years, I have been using ChatGPT.

At the beginning, I treated it like a new kind of search engine. I asked questions, looked for information, and tried to understand what this new AI could do.

But something has changed.

Today, I don't really think of ChatGPT as just a tool anymore.

I think of it as my AI companion and capable assistant.

It is always there. It doesn't get tired. It doesn't complain when I ask the same question twice. It has enormous knowledge, and perhaps most importantly, it has patience.

For someone like me, that is quite amazing.

Am I Becoming Smarter?

Recently, I asked myself a simple question:

Am I actually improving my ability and intelligence by using AI?

I don't think AI suddenly makes me smarter.

But I do think it has helped me use my own ability better.

I have many ideas. Sometimes they are clear in my head, and sometimes they are just a few scattered thoughts.

I can now bring those thoughts to AI and say:

"Here is what I am thinking. What do you think?"

From there, we can develop the idea together.

A simple thought can become a story.

A rough paragraph can become a proper article.

A question can become research.

A problem can become a plan.

And something I might have spent hours trying to figure out can sometimes be understood in minutes.

That is not necessarily becoming more intelligent.

Perhaps it is becoming more effective.

I Can Do Things I Couldn't Do Before

This is where I notice the biggest difference.

I can write more professionally.

I can organize my thoughts better.

I can create blog posts more efficiently.

I can translate my writing into Chinese.

I can work with images and videos.

I can solve technical problems with my blogs.

I can learn about subjects that I know very little about.

And when I have an idea for something new, I don't have to leave it sitting in my head.

I can start working on it immediately.

That is powerful.

The combination is quite simple:

My experience + my ideas + AI's knowledge and speed.

Together, we can accomplish much more than I could do alone.

But There Is a Danger

There is something else I have been thinking about.

If AI can answer almost everything for me, am I actually thinking less?

That is a legitimate question.

If I simply ask AI for an answer every time I face a problem, I might become dependent on it.

That isn't what I want.

I don't want AI to replace my thinking.

I want AI to improve my thinking.

Sometimes I should ask:

"Don't give me the answer yet. Help me think about this."

That changes the relationship.

Instead of AI doing the thinking for me, we think through the problem together.

I still make the final decision.

Am I Using AI Effectively?

That is probably my next question.

I have learned how to use ChatGPT.

But have I learned how to use AI effectively in my daily life?

I don't think I have reached that point yet.

There is still much more to learn.

For example, I could use AI every morning to help organize my day.

I could discuss an idea as soon as it comes into my head.

I could use AI to help me learn something new instead of simply searching for information.

I could ask it to challenge my thinking when I am making an important decision.

At the end of the day, I could even review what I accomplished and ask:

"What did I learn today?"

That would be very different from simply opening ChatGPT when I have a question.

It would make AI part of my daily routine.

The Human Still Matters

After two years with AI, I have come to appreciate something very important.

AI may have enormous knowledge, but it doesn't have my life experience.

It hasn't lived my life.

It doesn't know what it feels like to be a grandfather.

It doesn't remember the little moments that have shaped my life in the same way I do.

It can help me write a story.

But I have to provide the story.

It can help me organize my thoughts.

But I have to have the thoughts.

It can give me another perspective.

But I have to decide what I believe.

That is why I don't see AI as replacing me.

I see it as helping me get more out of myself.

Two Years Later

Two years ago, I couldn't have imagined that AI would become such a regular part of my life.

Today, I use it for writing, learning, research, blogging, problem-solving and many of the small questions that appear during an ordinary day.

And I am still learning.

Maybe that is the most interesting part.

At my age, I don't expect to stop learning.

Quite the opposite.

AI has given me another reason to remain curious.

So, am I becoming smarter?

Maybe.

Am I becoming more efficient?

Definitely.

But perhaps there is a better way to describe it.

AI hasn't given me a new brain.

It has given me a new way to use the brain, experience and curiosity I already have.

And now I have another question for myself:

What else can I learn to do with my AI companion?

I suppose that will be the next part of the journey.

From Thousands of Affiliate Products to a Few I Can Actually Recommend

My Affiliate Journey Continues

When I first joined ShareASale several years ago, I never imagined that one day I would be looking at thousands of products and asking myself:

“Which ones are actually worth my time?”

ShareASale has now become part of Awin, one of the major affiliate marketing platforms. When I logged in and started looking around, I discovered an enormous marketplace of products and companies.

There are products in almost every category imaginable.

But my interest is much narrower.

I am particularly interested in AI products—especially AI video creation, AI writing, and AI productivity tools.

And that is where my problem begins.

There are simply too many choices.

I Don't Want to Join Everything

I could spend days clicking the “Join Program” button.

AI writing tools.

AI video makers.

AI presentation software.

AI productivity platforms.

AI marketing tools.

AI voice and audio tools.

And the list goes on.

But I don't think joining hundreds of affiliate programs is a good strategy for me.

After all, I am not trying to build a giant affiliate website filled with hundreds of random products.

I want to build AI123.ca around my own experience with artificial intelligence.

That means I would rather find a smaller number of AI products that I understand, use, and can honestly talk about.

This is where my AI assistant—ChatGPT—comes in.

I Asked ChatGPT to Help Me Choose

Instead of looking at thousands of programs by myself, I decided to ask ChatGPT for help.

I explained what I am trying to accomplish with AI123.ca.

I told ChatGPT that I am particularly interested in:

  • AI video creation

  • AI writing

  • AI productivity

  • AI tools that ordinary people can actually use

  • Products that fit naturally with the content of my blog

Then I asked it to help me evaluate the programs before I joined them.

This doesn't mean I simply tell ChatGPT, “Pick something for me.”

The final decision is still mine.

I want to understand what the product does, who it is for, whether it fits my readers, and whether I can write about it from my own perspective.

That distinction is important.

AI can help me investigate. It doesn't replace my judgment.

One Program Is Already Approved

So far, I have successfully joined AV Access.

That was encouraging.

It means the process is beginning to work.

I am also waiting to hear about some other AI-related programs.

For example, Pictory is still pending, and WriteSonic is another program I am interested in exploring.

I am not going to pretend that every application will be accepted.

Some companies may approve me.

Some may decline me.

Some may take time to respond.

That's part of the process.

And honestly, I am learning as I go.

Why Pictory Interests Me

Pictory is particularly interesting to me because I have been experimenting with video creation myself.

I have created many YouTube videos, and I know from experience that traditional video editing can take time.

If an AI tool can help turn written content into video, create scenes, add captions, or simplify the editing process, that is something I want to understand better.

But before I recommend it to my readers, I want to know more than just its affiliate commission.

I want to know:

Does it actually help?

That is a much more important question.

AI Writing Is Another Area I Am Watching

The same thing applies to AI writing tools such as WriteSonic.

There are many AI writing platforms available today.

Some are excellent.

Some may be useful for certain people but unnecessary for others.

And some may simply not be right for my audience.

I don't want AI123.ca to become a collection of affiliate links.

I want it to become a place where I can say:

“I tried this. Here is what I discovered.”

That is much more valuable.

I Am 80, and I Am Still Learning

There is another reason I find this whole affiliate journey interesting.

I am an 80-year-old grandfather.

I am not a technology company.

I am not an AI engineer.

I am simply someone who became fascinated by artificial intelligence and decided to keep learning.

Sometimes I understand a new AI tool quickly.

Sometimes I don't.

Sometimes I have to ask ChatGPT the same question twice.

And sometimes I make mistakes.

But perhaps that is exactly what makes this journey interesting.

There are probably many people reading AI123.ca who are also wondering:

“Can someone like me really use these AI tools?”

My answer is becoming clearer every day:

Yes—but you don't have to learn everything at once.

Affiliate Marketing Is New Territory for Me

I also want to be candid about something else.

Affiliate marketing is still relatively new territory for me.

I have joined affiliate networks before, including ShareASale, and now I am learning how Awin works.

I am also exploring programs individually.

There is a learning curve.

I have to understand approval processes, affiliate links, commissions, program rules, tracking, and—most importantly—how to recommend products responsibly.

I don't want to recommend a product simply because it pays a commission.

If I don't believe a product is useful, I would rather not recommend it.

My New Strategy

So my strategy is becoming quite simple.

Instead of asking:

“How many affiliate programs can I join?”

I am asking:

“Which AI products genuinely fit AI123.ca?”

That is a completely different question.

I am looking for products in areas such as:

AI Video → AI Writing → AI Productivity → AI Marketing → Other Useful AI Tools

Then I will investigate them one at a time.

I will ask ChatGPT to help me compare them.

I will read the program information.

I will look at the product itself.

And whenever possible, I want to actually use the product.

Only then can I tell my readers what I think.

ChatGPT Is My Research Partner

This is probably the most interesting part of my affiliate journey.

I am not using ChatGPT simply to write advertisements.

I am using it as a research partner.

I can say:

“Here are five AI affiliate programs. Which ones appear to fit the direction of AI123.ca?”

Then we can discuss them.

We can compare their products.

We can consider their audience.

We can look at whether they fit my existing articles.

And finally, I make the decision.

For me, this is a much better way to approach affiliate marketing.

There Is No Need to Rush

I am learning that affiliate marketing is not a race.

I don't need 500 affiliate programs.

I don't even need 100.

If I eventually find 10 or 20 AI products that I genuinely understand and can recommend honestly, that may be much more valuable.

The goal isn't to have the longest list.

The goal is to have the right list.

And I think that is an important lesson for anyone beginning affiliate marketing.

My AI123.ca Affiliate Experiment Has Begun

So, this is where I am today.

I have successfully joined AV Access.

Pictory is pending.

WriteSonic is on my radar.

And there are many more AI programs waiting for me to investigate.

I am going to take my time.

I will use ChatGPT to help me research and compare them, but I will make the final decisions myself.

And I will share the journey here on AI123.ca.

I don't know yet which programs will become long-term partners.

I don't know how much affiliate income this experiment will eventually generate.

But I do know one thing:

I am having fun learning.

At 80, I am still discovering new technology, experimenting with new ideas, and finding new ways to build something.

Maybe that is the real adventure.

The affiliate links may eventually generate some income.

But the learning journey itself is already worth something.

And I am just getting started.

找到几十个真正值得研究的;

🧠 Week 2: What Is AI? Understanding the Basics in Simple Terms

So you’ve met ChatGPT and started chatting with it — well done! This week, we’ll focus on a big question many people (not just seniors!) ask:

“What exactly is Artificial Intelligence?”

Don’t worry — we’ll keep things simple, clear, and maybe even a little fun.

🤖 What Is AI (Artificial Intelligence)?

Think of AI as a kind of smart helper built into a computer.
It’s designed to do things that usually require human thinking — like:

  • Understanding language

  • Answering questions

  • Making decisions

  • Recognizing patterns (like faces or voices)

  • Learning from experience

ChatGPT, the tool you’re using right now, is a kind of AI that specializes in language — it can read, write, and chat with you in a very human-like way.

💬 A Simple Analogy

Imagine you’re talking to a well-read friend who has memorized millions of books and articles. They listen carefully, understand your question, and respond based on what they’ve learned.

That’s what AI like ChatGPT does — it doesn’t “think” like a human, but it can use its training to help answer, explain, or even create content.

🧩 What’s the Difference Between AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning?

You may have heard these terms before — let’s break them down:

TermSimple Explanation
AIThe big idea: teaching computers to think and act smart.
Machine LearningA way for computers to learn from data — like how Netflix learns your movie taste.
Deep LearningA more advanced part of machine learning — it mimics the way our brains work. Great for voice recognition, face detection, etc.

🏠 How Is AI Used in Daily Life?

AI is all around us, even when we don’t notice it:

  • 🗣️ Voice assistants like Siri or Alexa

  • 📸 Face recognition on phones or photo apps

  • 🚗 GPS & traffic apps that learn your route

  • 🛒 Online shopping that recommends products

  • 📧 Spam filters in your email inbox

  • 🏥 Medical diagnosis tools powered by AI

Even your smart TV might be using AI to suggest shows you might like.

💡 Try This with ChatGPT

This week, give these questions a try:

  1. “Explain AI like I’m a 10-year-old.”

  2. “What’s machine learning in simple terms?”

  3. “Give me 5 real-life examples of how AI is used today.”

  4. “Can you tell me a funny story about a robot learning to cook?”

📝 This Week’s Activity

Write a short summary (2–3 sentences) in your own words:

“What is AI, and how do I see it in my daily life?”

If you want, you can even ask ChatGPT:

“Can you help me write a short paragraph explaining what I learned about AI this week?”

✅

👋 Welcome to the Series!

If you’ve ever said, “I’m too old to learn this AI stuff,” let me stop you right there — you’re not.
And with ChatGPT, learning can be as simple as having a friendly conversation.

🤖 What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an advanced AI developed by OpenAI. But you don’t need to know the tech behind it — just think of it as a smart assistant who can help explain things, answer questions, write stories, make lists, and even chat for fun.

Best of all? It never gets tired or impatient.

💡 How to Get Started

  1. Go to chat.openai.com (bookmark it if you like!)

  2. Sign up for a free account if you don’t have one.

  3. Click on the chat box and start typing — just like talking to a friend.

Here’s a prompt you can try:

“Hi ChatGPT, I’m a senior who’s curious about AI. Can you explain what you are and how you can help me learn?”

🛠️ Things You Can Do This Week

✅ Ask it questions like:

  • “What is AI?”

  • “How do you work?”

  • “What are some easy topics I can start learning about?”

✅ Try something fun:

  • “Can you tell me a short joke about old age and wisdom?”

  • “Can you write a 4-line poem about learning new things after 70?”

✅ Use it for your daily tasks:

  • “What are 3 easy exercises for seniors at home?”

  • “Give me a simple recipe for dinner.”

📝 Assignment (Optional but Fun!)

Try to have at least three small conversations with ChatGPT this week.
Write down anything interesting or funny it says — you might want to share it later!

💬 Next Week:

We’ll learn about what AI actually is, and how it’s used in everyday life — from smart phones to voice assistants to medicine.

Until then, enjoy exploring — and remember, there’s no such thing as a silly question here.
