Learning AI after 80—simple, practical, and real.

I’m David, a retired grandfather exploring AI step by step.

🧠 Week 2: What Is AI? Understanding the Basics in Simple Terms

So you’ve met ChatGPT and started chatting with it — well done! This week, we’ll focus on a big question many people (not just seniors!) ask:

“What exactly is Artificial Intelligence?”

Don’t worry — we’ll keep things simple, clear, and maybe even a little fun.

🤖 What Is AI (Artificial Intelligence)?

Think of AI as a kind of smart helper built into a computer.
It’s designed to do things that usually require human thinking — like:

  • Understanding language

  • Answering questions

  • Making decisions

  • Recognizing patterns (like faces or voices)

  • Learning from experience

ChatGPT, the tool you’re using right now, is a kind of AI that specializes in language — it can read, write, and chat with you in a very human-like way.

💬 A Simple Analogy

Imagine you’re talking to a well-read friend who has memorized millions of books and articles. They listen carefully, understand your question, and respond based on what they’ve learned.

That’s what AI like ChatGPT does — it doesn’t “think” like a human, but it can use its training to help answer, explain, or even create content.

🧩 What’s the Difference Between AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning?

You may have heard these terms before — let’s break them down:

TermSimple Explanation
AIThe big idea: teaching computers to think and act smart.
Machine LearningA way for computers to learn from data — like how Netflix learns your movie taste.
Deep LearningA more advanced part of machine learning — it mimics the way our brains work. Great for voice recognition, face detection, etc.

🏠 How Is AI Used in Daily Life?

AI is all around us, even when we don’t notice it:

  • 🗣️ Voice assistants like Siri or Alexa

  • 📸 Face recognition on phones or photo apps

  • 🚗 GPS & traffic apps that learn your route

  • 🛒 Online shopping that recommends products

  • 📧 Spam filters in your email inbox

  • 🏥 Medical diagnosis tools powered by AI

Even your smart TV might be using AI to suggest shows you might like.

💡 Try This with ChatGPT

This week, give these questions a try:

  1. “Explain AI like I’m a 10-year-old.”

  2. “What’s machine learning in simple terms?”

  3. “Give me 5 real-life examples of how AI is used today.”

  4. “Can you tell me a funny story about a robot learning to cook?”

📝 This Week’s Activity

Write a short summary (2–3 sentences) in your own words:

“What is AI, and how do I see it in my daily life?”

If you want, you can even ask ChatGPT:

“Can you help me write a short paragraph explaining what I learned about AI this week?”

✅

👋 Welcome to the Series!

If you’ve ever said, “I’m too old to learn this AI stuff,” let me stop you right there — you’re not.
And with ChatGPT, learning can be as simple as having a friendly conversation.

🤖 What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an advanced AI developed by OpenAI. But you don’t need to know the tech behind it — just think of it as a smart assistant who can help explain things, answer questions, write stories, make lists, and even chat for fun.

Best of all? It never gets tired or impatient.

💡 How to Get Started

  1. Go to chat.openai.com (bookmark it if you like!)

  2. Sign up for a free account if you don’t have one.

  3. Click on the chat box and start typing — just like talking to a friend.

Here’s a prompt you can try:

“Hi ChatGPT, I’m a senior who’s curious about AI. Can you explain what you are and how you can help me learn?”

🛠️ Things You Can Do This Week

✅ Ask it questions like:

  • “What is AI?”

  • “How do you work?”

  • “What are some easy topics I can start learning about?”

✅ Try something fun:

  • “Can you tell me a short joke about old age and wisdom?”

  • “Can you write a 4-line poem about learning new things after 70?”

✅ Use it for your daily tasks:

  • “What are 3 easy exercises for seniors at home?”

  • “Give me a simple recipe for dinner.”

📝 Assignment (Optional but Fun!)

Try to have at least three small conversations with ChatGPT this week.
Write down anything interesting or funny it says — you might want to share it later!

💬 Next Week:

We’ll learn about what AI actually is, and how it’s used in everyday life — from smart phones to voice assistants to medicine.

Until then, enjoy exploring — and remember, there’s no such thing as a silly question here.
