An AI Thought I Was 75. I’m 80.

 

A few days ago, during an ice storm, I stayed home.
No ping pong. No karaoke. Just quiet reading, blogging, and a conversation with my AI companion.

Out of curiosity—and perhaps a bit of mischief—I shared a recent self-portrait taken in January 2026 and posed a simple challenge:

“Based on this photo, how old do you think the man is?”

The AI studied the image carefully and gave its answer:



Early to mid-70s. Around 72–76.

I smiled.

Because the truth is—
👉 I am 80 years old.

Not a Compliment, But a Mirror

This wasn’t about fishing for compliments.
AI doesn’t flatter. It analyzes patterns—posture, facial features, expression, presence.

What struck me was not the number it guessed, but what the guess reflected:

  • An upright posture

  • Alert eyes

  • A calm, steady presence

  • Hands that show age, but not fragility

In other words, not youth—but readiness.

The Driving Licence Moment

Around the same time, I had just renewed my senior driving licence.

That process is more than paperwork. It quietly checks:

  • vision

  • reaction

  • awareness

  • judgment

Passing it at 80 felt less like an achievement and more like confirmation:

I’m still independent.
I’m still capable.
I’m still trusted to move through the world on my own terms.

Aging Is Not a Cliff

We often talk about aging as if it’s a sudden drop-off:
“You reach a certain age, and things just go downhill.”

That hasn’t been my experience.

Aging, for me, feels more like adjusting speed, not losing direction.

  • I move a bit slower.

  • I choose more carefully.

  • I rest when needed.

But I still play ping pong.
I still blog.
I still learn new tools (yes, including AI).
I still enjoy conversations that stretch the mind.

What 80 Feels Like

Eighty doesn’t feel like a number.
It feels like perspective.

I worry less about proving myself.
I value clarity over noise.
I appreciate quiet moments more deeply.

If an AI thinks I look 75, that’s fine.
If someone thinks I look 85, that’s fine too.

What matters is this:

I wake up curious.
I stay engaged.
I live my days, not just count them.

A Final Thought

This little exchange with AI reminded me of something simple but important:

Aging well isn’t about looking young.
It’s about remaining fully present.

And as long as I can sit at a table, hold a conversation, share a story, and look ahead with interest—

I’d say I’m doing just fine.
