Chinese New Year has always been about reunion. This year, as I sat at Sam’s mom’s house, I felt once again how precious these gatherings are — especially as we grow older.
The Warmth of the Table
The dining table was full — not only with food, but with memories.
There were traditional dishes prepared with care, each carrying meaning: prosperity, longevity, harmony. The aroma filled the room long before we sat down. Laughter mixed with the clinking of bowls and chopsticks. Conversations overlapped in Cantonese — sometimes serious, sometimes playful.
At our age, we no longer rush through meals. We savor them. Not only the taste, but the company.
Conversations Across Generations
Sam’s brothers shared stories — about work, about health, about how the world seems to be changing faster each year. We reflected on how different Chinese New Year feels today compared to decades ago.
In the past, celebration meant fireworks and red envelopes.
Today, celebration also includes something unexpected — artificial intelligence.
A Mother Meets AI
The most touching moment of the evening was when Sam set up the Cantonese version of ChatGPT for his mother.
He patiently showed her how to speak to it. She looked at the screen with curiosity. When it responded in Cantonese, her eyes widened. Then she smiled.
Not the smile of an elderly woman.
The smile of a child discovering something magical.
In that moment, age disappeared. Curiosity took over. Technology was no longer intimidating — it became playful.
I realized something important: openness is a rare virtue. Many people close themselves off as they grow older. “Too complicated.” “Too modern.” “Not for me.”
But she chose to try.
That choice is precious.
Reflection for the New Year
As we begin this new year, I am grateful — for health, for friendship, for family, and for the ability to keep learning.
Perhaps the true blessing this year is not only prosperity or longevity.
Perhaps it is the courage to remain open.
To new tools.
To new ideas.
To new conversations.
Even in our later years.
May we walk into this year with open hearts, curious minds, and the courage to let peace take root — within ourselves, our families, and the world.
