Learning AI after 80—simple, practical, and real.

I’m David, a retired grandfather exploring AI step by step.

How I Use AI for Writing: A Simple Conversation About ChatGPT at a Dim Sum Gathering

At our usual dim sum gathering, the conversation sometimes drifted into something I didn’t expect — AI.

A few friends noticed my writing and asked directly, “Are you using AI for your articles?”

I didn’t hesitate. I told them the truth.

I use ChatGPT, but in a very simple way: I write a draft first, based on my own thoughts and experiences, and then I ask AI to help me polish it. That’s it. Nothing complicated.

It felt good to say it in such a straightforward way. No need for technical explanations or fancy terms. Just a practical tool that helps me express myself more clearly.

Then someone asked an interesting question. He said, “If I just type keywords like siu mai, har gow, congee, dim sum… will AI write the article for me?”

That’s when the real discussion began.

I told him honestly — yes, AI can generate something from keywords. But it will likely be very general. It may describe dim sum culture nicely, but it won’t sound like your story. It won’t reflect your memories, your family moments, your favorite restaurant, or your personal taste.

And that’s the difference.

If you want a real article — something you can truly call your own — you need to add more than keywords. You need to add your experiences, your feelings, and your identity. That is what turns simple content into a meaningful story.

Otherwise, you are just getting a “standard article.” Nice words, but no soul behind them.

One friend nodded and said he might try it soon. I hope he does. Because I believe many people around us already have stories worth telling — they just don’t know how to start.

AI doesn’t replace those stories. It simply helps bring them out more clearly.

And maybe that is the real value.

We are not becoming “AI writers.”
We are still just people telling our own stories — with a little help from a tool.
