Fei-Fei Li — From New Immigrant to “AI Godmother”: Why AI Is Called AI & How ChatGPT Era Was Born**

When I came across this YouTube video, I quickly realized it was more than a biography.
It was a story about immigration, struggle, science, and how one person can change global technology.

Fei-Fei Li is often called “The Godmother of AI”, and once you hear her story, it’s easy to understand why.

1. Why is “AI” called AI? A simple name with a big dream

The term “Artificial Intelligence” dates back to the 1956 Dartmouth Conference,
where a group of bold researchers decided to chase a dream:

To make machines think, learn, and understand like humans.

The name “AI” came from human imagination.
Today, that dream is finally materializing.

2. Fei-Fei Li’s journey: from a laundromat to Stanford University

What makes Fei-Fei Li inspiring is not only her achievements, but her background:

  • Immigrant family

  • Struggled with English

  • Worked at her family laundromat

  • Earned scholarships

  • PhD at Princeton

  • Stanford professor

  • Creator of ImageNet

ImageNet became a turning point in AI history because it taught computers how to “see.”
Without ImageNet, we would not have:

  • visual AI

  • medical imaging AI

  • self-driving cars

  • security systems

  • and even parts of modern generative AI

Fei-Fei Li didn’t just join AI history — she shaped it.

3. Working alongside Hinton & LeCun: The roots of the ChatGPT era

The video also highlights the AI pioneers:

  • Geoffrey Hinton – Father of Deep Learning

  • Yann LeCun – Father of Convolutional Neural Networks

  • Fei-Fei Li – Vision AI pioneer

Together (along with many researchers),
they laid the foundations that eventually enabled systems like ChatGPT.

The important message is:
ChatGPT wasn’t magic — it was decades of quiet, persistent work.

4. What this video made me reflect on

1. AI is built on human dreams

Not machines — people.
People with hope, curiosity, and courage.

2. Breakthroughs are collective efforts

No single genius built AI.
It was teamwork, over decades.

3. Ordinary people can join the AI era too

Fei-Fei Li’s story shows that AI isn’t exclusive.
Anyone can learn, explore, and benefit — including seniors, newcomers, or casual learners.

Just like me doing now on ai123.ca:
using AI to write, learn, communicate, and express creativity.
